Murray State’s women’s soccer team opened its season with a narrow 1-0 loss to Georgia Southern, marking the Racers’ inaugural match in program history.
The Racers generated a flurry of chances, outshooting the Eagles 14 to 9 and dominating possession for large stretches, yet a combination of tight defending and a few wayward attempts kept the scoreboard blank until the 26th minute.
Key Moments in the First Half
Early in the fourth minute, Addison Howell sent the first shot on goal, and Natalie Miller tested the defense in the 11th, but it was Georgia Southern who broke through when a well‑placed assist found a striker in the box, delivering the only goal of the night.
Goalkeeper Erin O'Shea made a crucial save in the 19th minute, and later in the half, Breece Bass drew a save with a sharp strike, while Kate Stordy’s effort clipped the crossbar in the 34th. Griselda Revolorio’s two second‑half stops in the 73rd and 79th minutes kept the deficit at one.
Head coach Ben Madsen reflected on the performance, saying the team is "close, just waiting for that breakthrough," and praised the attacking intent shown by players such as Bass and Miller, who each logged four shots.
The Racers will travel to Huntington, West Virginia, for their next contest against Marshall on Thursday, September 3, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
