NASCAR is bringing back its In-Season Challenge for the 2026 season, turning a portion of the regular schedule into a knockout tournament that pits 32 drivers against one another in a series of head-to-head races.
The concept, first introduced in 2025, uses the sport’s existing points structure to determine which competitor advances after each matchup. The driver who records the better finishing position moves on, while the loser is eliminated, creating a single-elimination bracket that runs alongside the traditional points battle.
For the opening round, the matchups have already been set at Sonoma Raceway in California. The California track will host the first series of duels, after which the competition will travel to four additional venues that were selected to test a variety of racing styles.
Tracks on the 2026 bracket
The tournament will be contested at five distinct tracks: Sonoma Raceway, Chicagoland Speedway in Illinois, EchoPark Speedway in Texas, North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina, and the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. Each venue offers a different challenge, from the road-course layout of Sonoma to the high-banked turns of Indianapolis.
The prize pool adds extra intrigue, with the champion taking home a $1 million payout. Tyler Gibbs captured that inaugural reward in 2025, and the 2026 edition promises a similarly lucrative incentive for the driver who can navigate the bracket and emerge victorious.
Beyond the monetary prize, the challenge serves as a strategic checkpoint for teams aiming to fine‑tune their cars before the playoffs. A strong showing can boost momentum, influence playoff seeding, and generate additional fan engagement throughout the summer schedule.
Fans can expect a packed slate of on‑track drama as drivers battle for survival in a format that blends the traditional NASCAR emphasis on endurance with the immediacy of a playoff atmosphere. The blend of road courses, intermediate ovals, and short tracks is designed to reward versatility and adaptability.
Drivers to watch
A host of seasoned competitors are slated to participate, including Tyler Reddick, Alex Bowman, Denny Hamlin, Ty Dillon, Ryan Blaney, Josh Berry, Chase Elliott, Noah Gragson, Austin Dillon, Kyle Larson, Riley Herbst, Chris Buescher, Daniel Suarez, Todd Gilliland, Carson Hocevar, Zane Smith, Christopher Bell, Ross Chastain, William Byron, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, Chase Briscoe, AJ Allmendinger, Bubba Wallace, Michael McDowell, Shane van Gisbergen, Ryan Preece, Erik Jones, Joey Logano, Austin Cindric, and Brad Keselowski.
