The NASCAR in‑season challenge tournament kicked off with a high‑stakes knockout format, pitting the sport’s seeded drivers against one another in a single‑elimination showdown.
At Sonoma Raceway, the excitement turned turbulent when the tournament’s top seed, Tyler Reddick, was upset in the opening round, falling to 32‑seed Alex Bowman.
Veteran Denny Hamlin, however, proved resilient. After surviving a spin and damage to his splitter, Hamlin powered past Ty Dillon to advance, underscoring the unpredictable nature of the series.
The early exits were not limited to Reddick. Daniel Suarez also joined him on the sidelines, making Reddick and Suarez the only drivers among the top‑10 seeds to be eliminated in the first round, a result that reshaped the bracket dramatically.
Second‑Round Matchups Set for Chicagoland
Next week’s second round will move to Chicagoland Speedway, where a slate of fresh pairings will determine the next wave of eliminations. Fans can look forward to contests such as Alex Bowman versus Austin Cindric, Todd Gilliland against Carson Hocevar, and Chase Briscoe taking on Ty Gibbs.
The lineup also features Michael McDowell versus Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson up against William Byron, Ryan Blaney facing Shane van Gisbergen, and Chris Buescher squaring off with Christopher Bell.
Additional matchups include Erik Jones versus Denny Hamlin, as well as a host of other competitors ready to fight for a spot in the later stages of the tournament.
