NASCAR Returns to Chicagoland Speedway
After a seven‑year absence, NASCAR is set to roar back onto the 1.5‑mile oval of Chicagoland Speedway, rekindling a partnership that last lit up the Illinois track in 2019. The upcoming weekend promises a fresh burst of energy for fans and drivers alike, marking a significant milestone in the series’ calendar.
Central to the preparation has been Goodyear’s choice of a tire package that has already demonstrated its capabilities on several intermediate‑size venues this season. Rather than unveiling a novel construction or compound, the tire supplier elected to rely on a proven configuration that has seen action at tracks such as Nashville Superspeedway, Michigan International Speedway and Pocono Raceway.
The test conducted in April brought together Cup Series standouts Kyle Larson, Ryan Blaney and Denny Hamlin alongside Xfinity Series competitors Justin Allgaier and Brandon Jones. Their feedback helped fine‑tune the setup, and Goodyear’s NASCAR product manager Rick Heinrich later confirmed that the established intermediate‑track package was the optimal route.
Under the new tire allotment, each Cup team will receive twelve sets: eight fresh race sets, one dedicated qualifying set and three practice sets. Xfinity teams will be allotted seven sets, comprising four new race sets, a qualifying set and two practice sets. Inner liners, standard for tracks of a mile or longer, will also be part of the package.
Because the tire strategy mirrors what teams have already experienced, the expectation is that they can quickly find speed and deliver consistent performance when the green flag drops. The familiar compound should translate into predictable handling, allowing drivers to focus on strategy and competition rather than adapting to unfamiliar rubber.
