A 25‑Car Pileup Stalls the O'Reilly Series at Coronado
On June 20, a 25‑car crash erupted during the NASCAR O'Reilly Series race at Naval Base Coronado, California, bringing the event to a halt for more than 40 minutes. The incident involved multiple competitors and required immediate medical attention for several drivers.
Sam Mayer, Anthony Alfredo and William Sawalich were among those evaluated on site. All three were cleared and released after the crash, though Mayer later issued a public apology, describing himself as "heartbroken and embarrassed" by the collision.
Alfredo characterized the impact as the biggest hit of his racing career but said he felt better after the incident. Investigators determined that Mayer clipped the inside wall before colliding with Alfredo’s car, setting off a chain reaction that involved many others.
While no serious injuries were reported, the damage to several vehicles was extensive enough that a number of drivers were forced to drop out of the race. The chaos reshaped the running order and created an unexpected opportunity for Austin Hill.
Austin Hill ultimately won the event, delivering Richard Childress Racing its first victory since the late Kyle Busch’s death. The win was celebrated as a emotional milestone for the team and its fans, underscoring the unpredictable nature of motorsport.
Looking Ahead
Series officials praised the quick response of medical personnel and the safety protocols that prevented more severe outcomes. They also noted that the incident will prompt a review of track layout and crowd control measures at Naval Base Coronado for future events.
