NASCAR to Expand Practice Sessions for Cup Series

New single-session format aims to boost competition for smaller teams

NASCAR Eyes Bigger Practice Windows

NASCAR is poised to roll out a significant adjustment to its Cup Series schedule next month, extending the amount of on-track time teams receive before the green flag.

The proposed format would replace the existing two-group practice structure with a single 50-minute session that includes the entire field, and each team would be allotted two fresh tire sets to fine-tune their cars.

Leveling the Field

The change comes after several seasons of growing pressure from teams and fans for more practice, and if approved it would rank among the most substantial competition-format changes the sport has seen in recent years.

Tracks such as Daytona and Talladega, because of their superspeedway nature, are expected to retain their current no-practice policy, while Homestead-Miami would keep its existing 50-minute slot.

By granting additional minutes on the tarmac, NASCAR hopes to give smaller and mid-level organizations a chance to experiment with chassis setups and develop strategies that were previously out of reach for them.

Current practice windows heavily favor larger teams that can leverage extensive simulation resources, leaving smaller outfits at a disadvantage. More time on track levels the competitive field and could reshape race dynamics.
