NASCAR is reducing the engine output for its summer Daytona event from 510 horsepower to 465 horsepower, a move intended to make passing easier and lessen the need for drivers to conserve fuel.
Legacy of low‑drag superspeedway engines
Earlier generations of Cup cars were built with lower‑output engines specifically for superspeedway competition, and the current package’s high drag and downforce have been a factor in the sport’s recent aerodynamic challenges.
Aerodynamic and gearing refinements
Under the new rule set, the rear spoiler will be trimmed from seven inches to four inches, while under‑body aerodynamic tweaks will be introduced to balance the loss of rear downforce.
A new drop‑gear ratio will also be fitted, allowing the cars to remain in the peak of their power band for a longer portion of each lap and to accelerate more readily when the throttle is lifted.
Targeted speed gap
Series officials say the combined changes are expected to shrink the speed differential between a leading car and one running in the middle of the pack to roughly ten or eleven miles per hour, a figure that sits between the nine‑mile‑per‑hour gap observed in 2021 and the over‑thirteen‑mile‑per‑hour gap recorded at this year’s Daytona 500.
NASCAR stresses that all of these adjustments must be applied together, both for safety and to ensure the intended performance characteristics are achieved.
