Schedule reshuffling and returning venues
The revised calendar places Richmond Raceway as the opening playoff venue on September 11, 2027, while Darlington Raceway’s iconic Southern 500 will serve as the regular‑season finale, pushing the traditional Labor Day weekend race to the final week of the season. Bristol Motor Speedway and Watkins Glen International, both historic tracks, are slated to return to the regular season schedule after a brief stint in the playoffs, adding variety for fans and drivers alike.
New Hampshire Motor Speedway will host the second playoff race on September 26, 2027, and World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway reverts to the regular season after two consecutive years in the postseason. Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Roval road course will be replaced by the oval configuration for 2026, though the road course will make a temporary comeback in 2027 via Watkins Glen International, ensuring a road‑racing element remains in the mix.
The adjustments are largely driven by the need to avoid clashes with major sporting events such as the Super Bowl and the Daytona 500, which forced NASCAR to shift the season start later in the calendar year. By doing so, the sport aims to maximize viewership and advertising revenue while preserving the tradition of its most storied tracks.
