NASCAR is set to debut a significant overhaul of its playoff system for the 2026 Cup Series, shifting the way drivers accumulate and retain points as the season progresses.
Under the new rules, the regular season will culminate with the top 16 drivers earning a spot in the postseason, but each of those competitors will have their scores wiped clean and reset to a baseline of 2,000 points before the playoffs begin.
Bonus points will then be added based on regular‑season performance, with the champion receiving 100 points, the runner‑up 75, and the remaining positions descending by five‑point increments, creating a tight race for those early advantages.
Current standings illustrate just how contested those bonus spots are; Denny Hamlin sits at the top, leading Tyler Reddick by 24 points and Ryan Blaney by 65 points in the battle for the coveted 100‑point reward.
The points gap between second and third place is a mere 10 points, and the separation among the next several drivers is equally narrow, underscoring the importance of each race in the final stretch.
North Wilkesboro Returns to the Calendar
The 21st race of the regular season will be held at North Wilkesboro Speedway on July 19, marking the first points‑counted event at the historic venue since 1996.
The Window World 450 will be broadcast live on TNT at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time, giving fans a prime‑time glimpse of the action as the playoff picture continues to crystallize.
