From Carver’s Turf to National Prominence
Nate Odomes, a Columbus native whose high school exploits at Carver High School still echo through local locker rooms, has been placed on the 2026 ballot for the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame. The nomination recognizes a career that began with a dual‑threat senior season in which he amassed over a thousand rushing yards and nearly a thousand passing yards, while also flashing playmaking ability in the secondary.
At the University of Wisconsin, Odomes reinvented himself as a cornerback, earning All‑Big Ten honors and intercepting seven passes in 1986, a season that helped the Badgers clinch a pivotal conference standing. His collegiate performance paved the way for an NFL career that would see him drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the second round of the 1987 draft.
A Pro Career Defined by Turnovers
During his eight‑year tenure with the Buffalo Bills, Odomes became a defensive stalwart, recording 26 interceptions and earning two Pro Bowl selections (1992‑93) along with second‑team All‑Pro recognition in 1993. That year he led the league with nine interceptions, a statistic that underscored his knack for reading the game. His contributions helped the Bills reach four consecutive Super Bowls, cementing his reputation as a clutch performer on the biggest stage.
After a brief stint with the Seattle Seahawks, hampered by a knee injury, Odomes finished his professional journey with the Atlanta Falcons in 1996. Though his career was shorter than some of his contemporaries, the impact of his turnovers and leadership left a lasting imprint on the teams he wore.
Hall of Fame Ballot and Upcoming Ceremony
The Hall of Fame’s 40‑member selection committee, composed of former coaches, players, administrators and reporters, will cast ballots to determine the 32 inductees who will be honored on Oct. 24 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. Odomes now stands among 33 candidates, a group that also includes other notable alumni from the Columbus‑Muscogee County area such as John Henry Jackson, Wallace Davis and Jasper Sanks.
Prospective voters can submit nominations by contacting Graham David and IJ Rosenberg of Score Atlanta at gdavid@scoreatl.com and ijrosenberg@scoreatl.com. The Hall has not imposed a time limit on how long a nominee may remain on the ballot, allowing continued consideration for those whose careers warrant broader recognition.
Beyond Odomes, the 2026 class will also celebrate former Columbus‑area standouts Isaiah Crowell, Ernie Green, Jarvis Jones and Otis Sistrunk, each of whom has left an indelible mark on the region’s football heritage. Their inclusion underscores the rich talent pipeline that has emerged from this part of Georgia.
