Nathan Liberty, a Quaker Valley High School alumnus and former standout athlete, has returned to his roots as the head coach of the Cambridge Springs football program, a move that has generated excitement across the Crawford County community.
Liberty’s coaching journey has been marked by a series of progressive steps, beginning with stints at Fairview in Erie before he took the reins at Cambridge Springs, where his father, Tom Liberty, serves as defensive coordinator, creating a unique father‑son partnership on the sidelines.
A Season to Remember
In 2023, the Cambridge Springs team under Liberty’s guidance posted a 12‑2 record, capturing both the Region 1 title and the District 10 championship, and earned a state ranking of tenth in Class A football, a milestone that underscored the program’s rapid ascent.
The success was not limited to wins; the team’s performance was highlighted by a strong defensive scheme and a balanced offense that kept opponents guessing, contributing to the program’s rise in the PIAA playoffs.
The upcoming season will open on August 28 with a road test at Rochester, a matchup that will serve as the first opportunity for the new roster to showcase the chemistry built during offseason workouts.
Cambridge Springs, situated in Crawford County near the towns of Meadville and Edinboro, benefits from a tight‑knit community that has rallied around the team’s recent achievements, drawing on a tradition of athletic excellence that dates back decades.
Hall of Fame Recognition
Liberty’s contributions to the sport were formally acknowledged when he was inducted into the Quaker Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2018, a testament to his collegiate success at Cal (Pa.) where he earned PSAC Scholar‑Athlete honors, a 2005 championship, and three‑time Presidential Scholar recognition.
His collegiate career included a four‑year stint as a defensive starter, participation in 12 varsity letters across multiple sports, and a reputation as a three‑time all‑conference and all‑state selection, cementing his status as one of the valley’s most decorated alumni.
The 2018 Hall of Fame class also featured notable figures such as Dickie Lee, Kelly Collins Grip, Jim Crable, and the 1991 boys soccer team, underscoring the breadth of talent that the valley has produced over the years.
