A New Chapter for the Youngstown Phantoms
Nathan Paetsch, a veteran of 17 seasons within the Buffalo Sabres organization, has been named head coach of the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League, taking over from Ryan Ward, who recently ascended to an assistant role with the Providence Bruins of the AHL.
Paetsch’s journey to the Phantoms bench began in the 2003‑04 season when he first laced up skates for Rochester, the Sabres’ American Hockey League affiliate. Over the next decade and a half he amassed 157 NHL appearances, famously skating in Game 7 of the 2006 Eastern Conference final, and later contributed as a development coach before stepping into a full‑time coaching capacity.
His appointment follows a turbulent offseason for the Sabres’ coaching staff. After Scott Moser, a Tonawanda native, succeeded Vinny Prospal as an assistant with the St. Louis Blues, the franchise found itself needing to replace a vacancy on Mike Leone’s staff for the second time this summer, a need now met by Paetsch’s move to Youngstown.
The Phantoms, a junior team that has served as a proving ground for talent, will benefit from Paetsch’s deep roots in Western New York hockey. His experience as a defenseman‑winger, combined with a stint as a development coach, equips him to mentor prospects and shape a competitive roster in the USHL.
The transition also reflects a broader reshuffling across the Sabres’ affiliate network. With Ryan Ward’s promotion to the AHL and the departure of Prospal to St. Louis, the organization is leveraging familiar faces to maintain continuity while injecting fresh leadership into its junior programs.
