The NBA has taken an unexpected turn into storytelling, unveiling a new brand called NINJA BASKETBALL ARMY that will debut alongside the 2026‑27 season.
Created by Japanese creative collective NINJA BASKETBALL ANONYMOUS and directed by Takaya Mitsunaga, the project reimagines 16th‑century Japanese clans as basketball teams, swapping swords for balls and battlefields for courts.
At its core, the narrative draws on the traditional game of temari, weaving it into a fictional timeline where feudal lords settle disputes through hoops, while each clan’s identity is marked by unique logos, kamon crests and a typeface inspired by ancient ninja script.
Tokyo Exhibition Unveils Immersive World‑Building
The brand first appeared at an exhibition in Tokyo, where visitors walked through an immersive environment filled with art works, apparel and interactive displays that brought the alternate history to life.
Collaboration with the Iga Ueno Chamber of Commerce and Industry helped shape the decorative script, linking contemporary design with regional heritage and reinforcing the project’s self‑contained universe.
Beyond aesthetics, the initiative reflects the NBA’s expanding cultural footprint in Japan, a market known for producing elite players and a passionate fanbase, while inverting the usual flow by pulling American basketball into a Japanese historical imagination.
The official launch will coincide with the opening of the NBA 2026‑27 season, promising a fresh blend of sport, story and fashion that could reshape how audiences experience the game.
