The National Basketball Association is weighing Las Vegas as the next frontier for expansion, a move that has already drawn the attention of deep‑pocketed ownership groups. Notable figures such as Earvin Magic Johnson, Bill Foley, and Shaquille O'Neal have publicly expressed interest in fielding a team, while Michael Jordan’s name has also surfaced in discussions about potential participation.
Potential Arena Sites
Multiple venues are being examined, including the existing T‑Mobile Arena, the expansive grounds of Resorts World, and the Las Vegas Festival Grounds owned by Phil Ruffin. Additional parcels under review range from undeveloped land at LVXP, formerly Wet ‘n Wild, to a 27‑acre site behind three Caesars Entertainment properties. MGM Resorts International is expected to wield considerable influence over where a new arena is constructed, given its extensive portfolio across the Strip.
Political stakeholders have entered the conversation as well. Governor Joe Lombardo has confirmed a series of meetings with prospective ownership groups, while Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley previously pitched a 20‑acre downtown plot that many groups prefer to locate on or near the Strip rather than in the downtown core.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has indicated that the league hopes to have an answer on expansion by the end of the year, adding a sense of urgency to the ongoing site selection and financing negotiations. Developers such as Oak View Group are also exploring acquisitions, like the Bali Hai Golf Club, to secure land for future arena projects.
