NC State Probes LSU Over Coach Will Wade’s Sudden Exit

Investigation raises questions about potential violations of state trade laws and buyout negotiations

North Carolina State officials have opened an inquiry into Louisiana State University’s handling of coach Will Wade’s departure, alleging that the Tigers may have induced the move in a way that skirts state trade regulations.

Wade, who had spent the 2023‑24 season at NC State after a prior stint with LSU from 2017 to 2022, resigned on March 25. The very next day LSU announced his hiring, a timing that has drawn the attention of the university’s legal team.

According to a letter from NC State General Counsel Allison B. Newhart, the rapid transition and the financial arrangements surrounding Wade’s exit raise questions about whether LSU violated the state’s Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act, which governs how employers may influence employee departures.

Legal and Financial Ramifications

The buyout agreement that had been set at $4 million was later adjusted, with the two parties settling on a figure between $3 million and $5 million after the original $5 million term dropped to $3 million on April 1. LSU ultimately covered the agreed amount in early May.

The investigation comes as LSU also dismissed coach Matt McMahon on the same day Wade was announced, ending a four‑year tenure that produced a 60‑70 record. The coincidental timing has intensified speculation about the broader implications for both programs.

If the inquiry determines that LSU engaged in prohibited conduct, the university could face civil penalties and be required to compensate NC State for the alleged damages. The case also underscores the growing intersection of college athletics, contract law and state consumer protection statutes.

Both schools have declined to comment further while the review is underway, but the episode has already prompted discussions among athletic directors about the need for clearer guidelines on coach transitions and buyout negotiations.
