NCAA Bans Airion Simmons Over Point-Shaving Scheme

The star guard’s alleged collusion with bettors leads to a lifetime ban and federal indictment.

NCAA Imposes Lifetime Ban

The NCAA announced a permanent ban for Airion Simmons, a former Abilene Christian basketball player, following a point-shaving investigation that rocked college basketball in early 2024.

According to the governing body, Simmons colluded with a teammate and a sports bettor to deliberately underperform in a March 2024 contest, receiving $3,500 for his role in the scheme.

The payment was exchanged in a Dallas parking lot, where Simmons met the bettor and agreed to "play bad" in exchange for cash, a detail that emerged during a December 2025 interview with the player.

Federal prosecutors in Pennsylvania later indicted Simmons, along with the two bettors, on charges of bribery, fraud and conspiracy, cementing the case as part of a broader point-shaving network that recruited players to fix games for money.

The NCAA also handed lifetime bans to two former Fordham basketball players who were implicated in the same scheme, underscoring the league’s zero‑tolerance stance toward match manipulation.

The sanctions reflect a growing effort by the NCAA to protect the integrity of college sports, as investigations continue to uncover illicit betting circles that threaten fair competition across the nation.
