Brendan Sorsby, a former quarterback who played at Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech, has been declared permanently ineligible by the NCAA after an extensive investigation into illegal sports wagering.
The governing body determined that Sorsby placed at least 40 prohibited bets on his own team and related programs, accumulating more than $90,000 in wagers over a four‑year span.
A Gambling Spree Across Multiple Programs
According to court filings, the bets were concentrated during the opening two months of the 2022 season at Indiana, but continued through his stints at Cincinnati and Texas Tech, where he wagered on both college and professional events.
Sorsby’s betting activity extended beyond football; records show he made roughly 2,900 wagers while at Indiana, including over $1,400 on Indiana men’s basketball and about 300 bets on college football games unrelated to his own team.
Legal and Institutional Response
The NCAA rejected a proposal from Sorsby to serve a two‑game suspension, a compromise that would have allowed him to return for the 2026 season.
Texas Tech filed a reinstatement request on May 19, which the NCAA denied on May 22; the university subsequently appealed the decision on May 29.
The case also revealed a financial trail, with Sorsby transferring more than $60,000 to an unnamed individual for deposit into a FanDuel account between December 2023 and June 2025.
In acknowledgment of his addiction, Sorsby completed a month‑long inpatient treatment program in Goodyear, Arizona, and has publicly pledged to seek lasting recovery.
