NCAA’s ‘5 for 5’ Rule Redefines College Athlete Eligibility

New policy lets student‑athletes compete all five seasons within a five‑year window, reshaping roster planning for programs like Arizona.

NCAA’s ‘5 for 5’ Rule Redefines College Athlete Eligibility

The NCAA announced this week that, beginning with the 2026‑27 academic year, student‑athletes will be allowed to compete in all five seasons of eligibility within a five‑year window. The policy eliminates the traditional redshirt system and lets players who have not yet exhausted their eligibility to extend their collegiate careers without penalty.

Coach Brent Brennan of the Arizona Wildcats welcomed the change, saying it simplifies eligibility rules and gives the program more flexibility in developing younger talent. “It removes a lot of the bookkeeping that used to tie our hands,” Brennan said in a statement.

Under the previous regulations, athletes had five calendar years to complete four seasons of competition, with football players permitted only four games in a regular season as a redshirt exception. That framework forced staff to monitor snap counts for freshmen and limited playing time for those not yet ready to contribute at full speed.

The new rule means that players can now see the field in every game without sacrificing a year of eligibility. For Arizona, that opens the door for freshmen such as running back Kedric Reescano, wide receiver Rodney Gallagher III and defensive lineman Leroy Palu to gain valuable experience across the full schedule.

Other athletes who stand to benefit include offensive linemen Justin Morales and Malachi Joyner, defensive linemen Keytrin Harris and Prince Williams, and receivers RJ Mosley and Caleb Smith. The policy also grants an additional year to seniors who have not yet used a redshirt, giving them a fifth season of play after the upcoming campaign.

Arizona’s roster currently lists seven players who fall under this provision: running back Kedric Reescano, wide receiver Rodney Gallagher III, offensive lineman Isaac Perez, defensive lineman Leroy Palu, and linebackers Taye Brown, Cooper Blomstrom and Everett Roussaw Jr. The coaching staff expects the depth to improve both immediate competitiveness and long‑term player development.

A new era for Arizona Wildcats

The implementation of the ‘5 for 5’ rule marks a significant shift in how college programs manage eligibility. By allowing athletes to spread their five seasons over any five‑year period, the NCAA is giving student‑athletes more control over their academic and athletic timelines. For Arizona, the change could translate into deeper rosters, more versatile lineups and a stronger foundation for future success.
