Nebraska Accelerates Women's Flag Football Launch
Nebraska is accelerating its entry into women's flag football, announcing that the program will begin competition in the 2027 season rather than the previously slated 2027‑28 schedule.
At the helm of the new squad is Liz Sowers, a five‑time national champion who previously coached at Ottawa University, alongside her sister Katie Sowers, who will serve as associate head coach. Their combined experience is expected to bring a high‑performance culture to the team from day one.
Games will be staged at Barbara Hibner Field, a facility currently shared with the university's soccer program. The venue’s existing infrastructure offers a ready-made home for the fledgling sport while the university evaluates future expansion possibilities.
By becoming the sole Power Five institution to sponsor women's flag football, Nebraska positions itself at the forefront of a growing collegiate movement. Conference officials in the Big 12 are also exploring the addition of flag football as early as 2028, signaling a broader shift toward the sport across the landscape of college athletics.
