A New Face in the Backfield
Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule is adding former Penn State running back Tikey Hayes just before fall camp, a move that underscores the Huskers' intent to reinforce a backfield that lost All‑American Emmett Johnson to the NFL.
High School pedigree
Hayes arrives with four years of eligibility remaining and a pedigree that includes a four‑star rating from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, where he amassed more than 5,000 rushing yards and 48 touchdowns over his high school career.
From Penn State to Iowa Western
After a brief stint at Penn State that yielded only 18 yards in the Pinstripe Bowl, Hayes entered the transfer portal, spent a season at Iowa Western Community College, and now enters the Nebraska program as a candidate for a rotational role.
Current depth chart
The Huskers' current stable includes Mekhi Nelson, who is navigating legal issues but posted 147 yards and two touchdowns in 2025; Isaiah Mozee, a converted wide receiver who contributed 114 rushing yards and 155 receiving yards; Kwintin Ives, the oldest of the group, who managed 133 yards and two scores despite injuries; and freshman Jamal Rule, who impressed with 121 yards and a touchdown in the Red‑White Spring Game.
Coach’s perspective
Coach Rhule has spoken highly of Rule, describing him as conscientious, tough and fast, while also noting that Hayes will compete for a spot in a committee that already features depth at the position.
The addition comes as the program evaluates cost considerations and satisfaction with the existing backfield, but the coaching staff sees Hayes as a valuable piece as they prepare for the 2026 season.
