A Season of Overachievement
Nebraska entered the regional with a 43‑17 record, the most wins the program had recorded since 2005, and with the distinction of hosting an NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008. The Huskers opened the weekend with a 6‑3 loss to Ole Miss, a game in which they trailed 6‑1 before Max Buettenback’s two‑run homer cut the margin, but a ninth‑inning rally fell short.
Late Innings, Missed Chances
The second contest against Arizona State proved equally tight. After the Sun Devils surged ahead with four home runs — including a grand slam by Dominic Smaldino — Nebraska answered with five runs in the seventh to pull within 11‑6. Yet the Huskers could not capitalize on a tying run that sat on deck in the ninth, and the 11‑8 final sealed their elimination.
Attendance figures of 7,835 on Saturday and 7,748 on Sunday reflected a dedicated fan base that remained engaged until the final out, even as some began to file out when the score stretched to 11‑1.
Looking Ahead
Coach Will Bolt emphasized that the foundation built this year will shape the next recruiting class, and the seniors’ contributions will be remembered as a turning point for Nebraska baseball. Players such as Jett Buck, Josh Overbeek, Drew Grego, Mac Moyer, Case Sanderson, Dylan Carey, Trey Fikes, and the aforementioned Max Buettenback and Dominic Smaldino helped define a season that exceeded expectations.
