Nebraska Dismisses Running Back Tikey Hayes Amid Roster Shuffle

The sudden departure follows a limited role at Penn State and a reshaped backfield for the Cornhuskers

Nebraska football announced the dismissal of redshirt freshman running back Tikey Hayes on Tuesday, offering no official explanation for the move. The decision comes as the Cornhuskers reshape a backfield that has seen both departures and new additions this offseason.

A Brief College Career

Hayes began his college football path at Penn State, where he appeared in a limited number of games and recorded three carries for 18 yards during the Nittany Lions' Pinstripe Bowl victory over Clemson. The exposure in a high‑profile bowl gave him a taste of postseason action, but his role on the depth chart remained peripheral.

After entering the transfer portal, Hayes landed at Iowa Western before committing to Nebraska. He took part in the Huskers' fall camp and was even featured at the August fan day, yet he never took a snap in a game for the university.

The current running back competition is shaping up to be a deep and versatile group. Sophomores Mekhi Nelson and Isaiah Mozee are joined by freshman Jamal Rule and junior Kwinten Ives, each bringing a different skill set to the position.

Redshirt freshman Conor Booth, a native of Wahoo, is also in the mix, adding local experience to the competition. Meanwhile, senior Vincent Genatone, originally recruited as a linebacker, has been reassigned to running back to provide depth and veteran presence.

The abrupt exit of Hayes leaves a question mark for the Cornhuskers' offensive plans, but the coaching staff appears confident in the talent they have assembled. As the team moves forward, the focus will be on how the new backfield unit gels during practice and, eventually, in game situations.
