The University of Nebraska announced this week that Amy Stephens will oversee the operations of its newly launched women's flag football program, a move that underscores the school's commitment to expanding opportunities for female athletes within a Power Five conference.
A Legacy Reimagined
Stephens brings a distinguished basketball pedigree to the role, having played for the Cornhuskers from 1985 to 1989 and contributed to a Big Eight title and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1988. Her achievements earned her a place on the Nebraska All‑Century Team, a testament to her lasting impact on the university's sports history.
Before joining Nebraska, Stephens enjoyed a successful coaching career at Nebraska‑Kearney (1994‑2002) and Drake University (2003‑2012), compiling a combined record of 348 wins and 173 losses. Her experience in developing competitive programs will now be directed toward building a championship culture for the flag football team.
The program will be guided on the field by Liz Sowers, a five‑time national champion coach at Ottawa University, with her sister Katie Sowers serving as associate head coach. This sibling duo brings a winning mindset and a deep understanding of high‑performance coaching to the new squad.
Games are slated to be played at Barbara Hibner Field, the current home of the Huskers' soccer program, providing a ready-made venue that can be adapted for flag football while the team establishes its own identity.
Beyond the campus, the Big 12 Conference is exploring the possibility of adding flag football to its lineup as early as 2028, a development that could position Nebraska as a trailblazer in a sport that is gaining national traction.
In a statement, Stephens expressed enthusiasm about returning to her alma mater and helping shape a program that she believes will grow the sport across the nation. "I'm excited to be back in Lincoln and to help build a championship culture that reflects the spirit of Husker Nation," she said.
