The University of Nebraska announced that its fledgling flag football program will begin competition at Barbara Hibner Field in the spring of 2028, marking a significant milestone for women's sports in the state.
A Home for a New Sport
Barbara Hibner Field, currently the primary venue for the Huskers' soccer program, provides a modest but expandable setting with a 2,500‑seat capacity. The stadium can grow through berm seating and standing‑room areas, allowing the university to accommodate larger crowds as the program gains traction.
The inaugural season will run from January through May, giving student‑athletes a unique indoor‑outdoor schedule that aligns with the academic calendar. Each participant will receive a scholarship, with the program initially allocating 15 scholarships for female student‑athletes.
Leadership and Legacy
Liz Sowers, a five‑time national champion coach from Ottawa University, will serve as the program's head coach. She made history as the first woman to coach in a Super Bowl, bringing a wealth of experience and a proven track record of excellence to the new team.
Her sister, Katie Sowers, will join as associate head coach. Katie's own coaching résumé includes a groundbreaking role in professional football and a reputation for developing talent, making the sibling duo a compelling draw for prospective players.
