A New Chapter for Nebraska Sports
Nebraska is set to field a women’s flag football team that will call Barbara Hibner Field its home. The stadium, currently the hub of the university’s soccer program, accommodates 2,500 spectators and can be stretched with berms and standing‑room areas to handle larger crowds.
The inaugural season is slated to begin in 2028, running from January through May. In its first year the program will offer 15 scholarships to female student‑athletes, marking a significant investment in women’s athletics at the university.
Leading the new squad is Liz Sowers, a five‑time national champion coach who previously guided Ottawa University to multiple titles. Sowers will be joined by her sister Katie as associate head coach, bringing a unique family dynamic to the sidelines.
Beyond the on‑field action, the initiative reflects a broader push to expand female participation in sports across the state. By leveraging an existing facility and focusing on scholarship opportunities, Nebraska hopes to set a precedent for other programs looking to grow women’s sports.
