Nebraska’s football program announced a significant change to its defensive staff this offseason, naming Rob Aurich as its new defensive coordinator.
Aurich, who previously coached safeties at Idaho, will implement a 4‑2‑5 defensive scheme, abandoning the 3‑3‑5 system that had been in place under the previous staff.
The move comes after John Butler was dismissed following a single season under head coach Matt Rhule, clearing the way for Aurich’s appointment.
Adding to the reshuffle, Tyler Yelk, a first‑year safeties coach with 14 years of college experience, is returning to the collegiate ranks after three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he contributed to a Super Bowl championship.
Yelk highlighted the cohesion of the new staff, noting that Aurich’s leadership has fostered a unified environment as the team prepares for its season opener against the Ohio Bobcats on September 5, a game that will be televised on FS1.
A Fresh Defensive Identity
The new 4‑2‑5 alignment is expected to bring more flexibility to the secondary, allowing Nebraska to adjust its pass rush and coverage packages more dynamically. Players are already adapting to the scheme during spring practices, and early reports suggest the unit is clicking.
With the coaching staff now in place, the Cornhuskers are focused on building chemistry before the first game of the 2026 season. The combination of Yelk’s experience and Aurich’s innovative approach could give Nebraska a competitive edge in the Big Ten.
