A Milestone for Nebraska Baseball
Dylan Carey, a senior shortstop for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, was announced as the 2026 Brooks Wallace Award recipient, the honor that crowns the nation’s finest collegiate shortstop.
The award, presented by the College Baseball Foundation, celebrates excellence on both sides of the diamond, and Carey’s blend of offensive firepower and defensive precision set him apart.
Carey’s statistical dominance was evident throughout the season, as he posted a career‑high .353 batting average while driving in 65 runs and hitting 15 home runs. His .981 fielding percentage came with just four errors in 216 chances, and he turned 29 double plays at shortstop.
Beyond the numbers, Carey etched his name into Nebraska history by becoming the program’s all‑time leader in career doubles with 63, and he joined an elite group by reaching the 200‑150‑150 mark — 266 hits, 167 RBIs and 165 runs scored.
He is only the second Husker to earn the Brooks Wallace Award, following Alex Gordon’s 2005 triumph, and his achievement continues a tradition of Nebraska producing elite shortstops.
The award’s namesake, Brooks Wallace, was a Texas Tech standout whose promising career was cut short by leukemia, a legacy that Carey now adds to the conversation about the sport’s next generation.
Nebraska’s program, supported by the College Baseball Foundation and its partners at Texas Tech University and the university’s official site, looks forward to building on this success as it aims for further national contention.
