The 8-Man Kick-Off Classic will open the high school football season in Grand Island, Nebraska, on August 29, turning Memorial Stadium into a showcase for a rapidly growing variant of the sport.
A first-of-its-kind showcase
Organizers have billed the event as the inaugural competition of its kind, gathering six programs that will contest three separate games under the 8-man format.
The opening contest pits the Arapahoe Bulldogs against the Clarkson Cougars at 1:30 p.m., followed by a mid-afternoon clash between the Dundy County Stratton Knights and the Hartington-Newcastle Knights at 4:30 p.m. The evening will close with a nightcap featuring the Elm Creek Cardinals versus the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders.
What’s at stake
Beyond the scores, the Classic provides a platform for smaller schools to gain statewide exposure, and it underscores the growing popularity of a format that emphasizes speed and versatility.
Local officials say the tournament could set a precedent for future 8-man seasons, offering a template for scheduling and broadcasting that may be adopted by other states.
