A late‑afternoon rainstorm pushed back the start of the PIAA Class 6A baseball championship, and when the clouds finally cleared the field at Villanova Ballpark the game began with a sense of anticipation. Neshaminy and Butler entered the contest tied 1‑1 after 3½ innings, each carrying a 20‑7 and 22‑3 record respectively.
Neshaminy struck first in the bottom of the first without recording a hit. Senior Mike Sassano walked, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a groundout by senior pitcher Chase Bonner.
Bonner, who had retired the first five batters and fanned four of them, later walked four consecutive batters, forcing in a run that shifted momentum.
The third inning offered a glimpse of a possible lead for Neshaminy. Center fielder Nick Sassano singled, reached second on a throwing error, and moved to third on Dylan Cloud’s grounder. A strikeout and a flyout ended the rally.
Despite the early drama, the game remained deadlocked, and both teams continued to trade chances as the rain‑soaked crowd watched.
A historic semifinal showdown
Earlier that week Neshaminy had edged Pennsbury 2‑1 in a semifinal at Villanova Ballpark, capitalizing on seventh‑inning runs. The victory marked the fifth meeting this season between the Lower Bucks rivals, with the SOL Patriot champion Falcons prevailing three times.
Neshaminy’s history under coach Dan Toner includes two prior state‑semifinal appearances in 2025 and 2019, both ending in defeat. Meanwhile, Butler, the District 7 champion, dispatched Owen J. Roberts 4‑2 in its semifinal, securing the school’s first ever baseball final appearance.
