Netflix announced the renewal of its football‑centric series "The Rest Is Football" for the 2026/27 Premier League season, promising two new episodes each week on Monday and Friday.
Hosts and Production
The show will be fronted by former England internationals Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, who also serve as hosts and executive producers through Lineker’s Goalhanger Entertainment.
Filming took place during the recent World Cup from a studio set in New York’s Times Square, giving the series a global backdrop that aligns with its trans‑Atlantic audience.
Although the series was praised by critics for its insightful commentary, it failed to attract the viewership numbers Netflix typically targets, leading to a modest rating profile.
The partnership with Goalhanger Entertainment also opened the door for Netflix to expand its sports documentary slate, which includes profiles of Jose Mourinho, Tyson Fury and Jamie Vardy.
Lineker’s exit from the BBC, triggered by an Instagram post that sparked controversy over an antisemitic trope, adds a personal dimension to the show’s narrative and highlights the sensitivities surrounding public figures in sports media.
