New Coaching Leadership Takes Shape in Chesterfield County

Winiecki Returns to Basketball, Rudd Takes Over at Matoaca, Jennings Leads Football at James River

Fresh Faces Lead Local Sports Programs

Chesterfield County, Virginia, is set to see a reshuffling of its high school sports leadership as three new coaching appointments take effect across its basketball and football programs.

Mike Winiecki, a former University of Richmond star who earned his place in the Spider Hall of Fame under coach Dick Tarrant, is returning to the county to lead the boys basketball team at Clover Hill High School. After a stint directing the Orlando Magic’s G‑League affiliate in Lakeland, Florida, Winiecki brings a blend of collegiate pedigree and professional experience to the role.

Billy Rudd, who most recently guided Meadowbrook High School to its first winning season in more than a decade, will now take the helm at Matoaca High School. His success at Meadowbrook highlighted a turnaround that has raised expectations for the program he will now lead.

Bryan Jennings, a coach with a history of playoff appearances at Huguenot and Clover Hill, has been named the new head football coach at James River High School. His recent work has been marked by consistent postseason runs, positioning him to bring that momentum to his new team.

The moves reflect a growing appetite for seasoned leadership in the region’s athletic departments, with each hire expected to influence not only game outcomes but also the development of student‑athletes in the community.
