A Fresh Era for the Falcons
Jhoan Alvizo, a Spanish and Portuguese teacher at Skyridge High School, has been appointed head coach of the girls soccer program following the retirement of longtime mentor Toby Peterson. Alvizo, who previously taught language courses while serving as an assistant coach, brings a unique blend of academic insight and tactical experience to the role.
The coaching transition comes at a pivotal moment for the Falcons, who will rely heavily on a core of senior players. Senior midfielder Bentley Knight is expected to anchor the midfield, while forward Lexi Blood, who led the team with eight goals and an assist last season, will look to add firepower up front.
Senior Leaders Step Up
Junior Hallee Sheffield, who controlled possession on both ends of the field and contributed two goals with an assist, and senior defender Gracie Watts, who recorded an assist from the back line, round out a senior class that Alvizo believes can provide steady leadership.
Alvizo acknowledges the difficulty of competing in Region 3, a conference he describes as the “region of death” because of its depth and parity. The Falcons open pre‑region play on Tuesday, August 4, against Olympus at 5 p.m., then embark on a three‑match road trip to face Desert Hills, Crimson Cliffs and Snow Canyon in the St. George area.
A Tough Road Ahead
Before the Region 3 schedule begins on September 1 at Lehi, the team will play three additional matches to fine‑tune chemistry. Alvizo says the experience and leadership of the seniors will be essential as the squad aims to meet the challenges of a demanding calendar and contend for success in the upcoming season.
