The New Kent 8-U baseball team clinched the state tournament last week, earning a berth in the South Eastern Regional Tournament that will be held in Florida next month. The victory has sparked excitement across the county, where youth baseball participation has grown to more than 500 participants this spring.
Travel to the regional event comes with a hefty price tag, prompting the team to launch a GoFundMe drive that has already attracted a few thousand dollars in donations. Local businesses such as Third Base Grill and Don Miguel’s Restaurant have pledged financial backing, underscoring the community’s commitment to the young athletes.
To close the funding gap, the team is hosting a fundraiser at Don Miguel’s Mexican Restaurant on July 1 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., inviting families and supporters to contribute while enjoying food and games. Head Coach Thomas Wingenbach thanked the community for its generosity, noting that the outpouring of support reflects a growing interest in baseball throughout New Kent.
Organizers say the funds will cover transportation, lodging and equipment for the players, ensuring that every member of the roster can represent New Kent on the regional stage. The team’s success has also inspired younger players, creating a pipeline that could keep the program competitive for years to come.
