New Mexico Girls Soccer Team Makes History with Elite 8 Run to Nationals

The 2010G GA squad becomes the state's first to compete at the national level, driven by coach Simon Rothman and standout players.

A Milestone for New Mexico Soccer

The New Mexico Soccer Academy’s 2010G GA Girls Soccer Team has etched its name into state history by becoming the first team from New Mexico to advance to the national championships. After a season of relentless effort, the squad earned a spot in the Elite 8 and will soon travel to Richmond, Virginia, to compete on the national stage.

Head coach Simon Rothman, who has guided the side since its inception, says the tournament represents more than just a game — it is a watershed moment for female athletes across the region. "This opportunity validates years of hard work and sets a new benchmark for girls' soccer in New Mexico," Rothman explained.

Players Sammi Eades and Taylor Roskos echoed the excitement, noting how the team has transformed from a relatively new program into a contender capable of challenging the nation's best. "We’ve grown together, and now we get to showcase what we’ve built," Eades said, while Roskos added, "Seeing our progress on such a big platform is incredibly rewarding."

The journey will begin on Wednesday, with the first match scheduled for Thursday against Sporting Nebraska FC. The team’s roster includes Gatorade Player of the Year honorees Winston Starr and Bryson Fankam, whose individual accolades reflect the talent that permeates the squad.
