The New Mexico Activities Association has unveiled its latest football classifications and district alignments for the 2026‑2028 seasons, a move that will reshape competition across the state, especially for teams in San Juan County.
Class 6A and Class 5A Shifts
Farmington High School will remain in the top‑tier Class 6A, where it will square off against perennial powerhouses such as defending champions Cleveland and La Cueva, promising another season of intense matchups.
Piedra Vista High School is slated to drop to Class 5A, joining a district that includes Cibola, Highland and Los Alamos, a grouping that could alter regional dynamics.
Class 4A and Class 3A Realignments
Bloomfield, the back‑to‑back Class 4A champion, will enter a new district alongside Del Norte, Española Valley and Taos, while Kirtland Central and Aztec will anchor a competitive Class 3A league that also features Gallup, Pojoaque Valley and St. Michael’s.
The lower classifications will see a dense clustering of local programs, creating a packed schedule that emphasizes intra‑regional rivalry. Shiprock Northwest High School, opting out of the traditional district structure, will compete as an independent for the upcoming block, giving the school flexibility in scheduling.
