Two institutions, Messiah University in Pennsylvania and Moorpark College in California, are set to field varsity women's flag football teams for the first time, marking a significant milestone for the sport at the collegiate level.
Messiah University will begin competition in the 2027‑28 academic year, while Moorpark College will enter the 3C2A conference schedule as a varsity program. Both schools are part of a broader trend of universities investing in flag football as a varsity offering, reflecting rising student interest and institutional support.
Eureka College in Illinois has also released its 2027 spring schedule, slated to open on March 3, 2027. The announcement adds to a calendar that now features dozens of matchups across the country, signaling a fully fledged season for many programs that previously operated only at the club level.
Coaching Vacancies Fuel Momentum
Alongside team additions, a host of coaching positions have been posted, creating a competitive job market for experienced tacticians and emerging assistants. Albright College in Pennsylvania named Eric Martin as its new head coach, while Citrus College in California appointed Scott Calles as its inaugural head coach for the 2026‑27 term. Neumann University in Pennsylvania announced Brandon Reese as the head coach of its women's flag football program, further diversifying the leadership landscape.
Numerous other schools are actively recruiting for head coaches, assistant coaches and graduate assistants to support the rapid expansion of their programs. Institutions ranging from Alverno University in Wisconsin to Grand Canyon University in Arizona have posted openings, underscoring the nationwide demand for qualified personnel as the sport matures.
The surge in varsity commitments and coaching hires reflects a strategic effort by colleges to formalize flag football pathways for female athletes. As more schools adopt varsity status, the sport is poised to cement its place in the collegiate athletic ecosystem, offering new scholarship opportunities and competitive structures for participants across the United States.
