New York Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled a $5 million program aimed at constructing soccer pitches in underserved neighborhoods across the state, part of a broader effort to promote teamwork and life skills among youth.
The effort, called New York Kicks, will fund the building of pitches, as well as uniforms, shin guards, soccer balls and coaching staff, with $1 million specifically allocated for equipment and coach salaries.
Hochul highlighted the personal lessons her children gained from playing soccer — learning to handle victory and defeat — as a model for the life skills she wants to see cultivated in young people.
More Than a Game
Pronoy Nath, a soccer coach in Queens, shared how the creation of a local pitch gave him the platform to become a community mentor, bringing together children from different cultures and backgrounds to communicate and collaborate.
The initiative also aims to reduce screen time by encouraging physical activity, a goal that aligns with Hochul’s upcoming announcement of an effort to provide affordable World Cup tickets for families across the state.
