Summer Showcase Highlights Young Talent
On June 16, the Newark Catholic girls basketball team took the court in a summer league contest without two of its regular starters. Freshmen Kennedy Rothweiler and Emma Streby seized the opportunity, delivering standout performances that hinted at the program’s bright future.
Senior Leah Cox and head coach Dani Adams were quick to praise the newcomers, noting that the team is actively rebuilding and encouraging more young players to step into leadership roles. Cox emphasized a culture of fearless play, urging the underclassmen to take charge without hesitation.
Rebuilding With Youth
The absence of senior Leah Caudill, who missed the game to compete in a national volleyball tournament, and Avery Yehle, who is focusing on soccer, left a noticeable gap in intensity. Coach Adams acknowledged the dip but highlighted the promising flashes he observed from the younger roster.
The summer league features larger schools such as Fairfield Union and New Lexington, providing a challenging environment for Newark Catholic’s developing squad. With only Sydney Gummer having graduated from last season’s team, the roster remains largely intact, allowing continuity in the rebuilding process.
Cox reiterated that the experience is as much about building confidence as it is about skill development. She urged the freshmen to embrace leadership opportunities and to play without fear, a message that resonates as the team looks to translate summer performances into the upcoming regular season.
