The Newark High School baseball squad clinched a 5-2 victory over Hilliard Darby in a district semifinal, advancing to the championship game with a performance built on precision small-ball execution and a dominant pitching outing.
Clutch pitching and strategic hitting
Senior right-hander Moses Crane delivered a solid start, throwing 92 pitches of which 58 were strikes, striking out four and walking two. His control kept the opposition at bay while the Wildcats' defense turned key grounders into outs, preserving the narrow lead.
Coach Michael Wheeler emphasized getting runners on base early, and the team answered with a series of sacrifice bunts, steals and aggressive baserunning that set the stage for a four-run rally in the middle innings.
Bottom of the order fuels the surge
Contributions from the lower part of the lineup proved decisive. Braylon Beckett and Landyn Ankrum drove in crucial runs, while additional arms such as Kade Romine, Josh Bowzer and Matt Irwin provided depth on the mound and in the field.
The Wildcats' motivation stems from a prior loss to Lancaster, a defeat that fuels their desire to capture the district title for the first time since 2008. They now turn their focus to the upcoming final against the sixth‑seeded host Shamrocks, a team from Dublin Coffman High School.
