Newman Catholic, known as the Knights, captured their eighth Iowa Class 1A state baseball championship on Saturday, defeating Moravia 11-1 in a game that will be remembered for its explosive fifth inning.
A Grand Slam That Changed Everything
The decisive moment arrived when Logan Vaske stepped into the batter’s box and launched a grand slam that turned a 4-0 lead into an 8-0 cushion. The blast ignited the crowd and shifted the momentum irrevocably.
Pitcher Kameron Kropp, who had already contributed an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, added a crucial strikeout to keep Moravia at bay. His performance on the mound, coupled with the offensive outburst, forced the game to end early under the 10-run mercy rule.
Newman Catholic’s path to the title was not straightforward. The Knights had earlier dispatched Ankeny Christian 9-4 in the quarterfinals and edged South Winneshiek 10-6 in the semifinals, each victory marked by timely hitting and solid pitching.
Moravia’s own journey was a Cinderella story. After opening the tournament with a 4-2 win over Coon Rapids-Bayard and a 5-2 triumph over North Linn, the Mohawks entered the championship game with a 29-4 record, hoping to rewrite their program’s history.
In the end, the Knights finished the season at 28-9, while Moravia concluded its remarkable run at 29-4. The victory marks Newman Catholic’s first state title since 2019 and underscores the program’s enduring tradition of excellence.
