Newton’s baseball squad delivered a decisive sweep of Pella Christian in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader, posting a 3-2 victory before following it up with a 14-1 rout.
First Game: A Narrow Win
The Cardinals struck first, plating two runs in the opening inning, but the Eagles answered with a tie in the second. Newton reclaimed the lead with a single run in the fourth and managed to hold on for the three-point margin.
Key contributors for Newton included Gabe Otto, who went 6-for-7 at the plate with four runs scored and an RBI, and Aaden Grimm, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The combined effort of Mason Mendez, Drew Bauer and Kreytein Wickliffe added six hits, six RBIs, four runs and two doubles.
Second Game: An Offensive Explosion
Newton exploded for 14 runs in the first three innings, turning a modest early lead into a commanding advantage. The trio of Mendez, Bauer and Wickliffe combined for a perfect 6-for-6 performance, driving in six runs and scattering two doubles across the lineup.
Pella Christian’s lone run came in the top of the fourth, courtesy of Dean DeRonde, who collected a hit in each game and scored the only point for the Eagles.
Looking ahead, Newton will host Knoxville tonight at 7 p.m., while Pella Christian is set to welcome Norwalk on Wednesday evening at the same time.
The back‑to‑back wins lift the Cardinals to a 9‑10 overall record and a 5‑7 mark within the conference, offering a glimmer of momentum as the season progresses.
