The Newton baseball team saw its season come to an abrupt end on Tuesday night, dropping a 2-1 decision to Saydel in the opening round of the Class 3A postseason.
A Close Contest
Despite generating early chances, the Cardinals were unable to convert key hits with runners on base, leaving the game tied heading into the later innings.
The decisive moment arrived in the bottom of the sixth, when Saydel manufactured the winning run to pull ahead and seal the victory.
Statistically, Newton finished with four hits and two walks, while the Eagles recorded three hits and seven walks, underscoring the Cardinals’ inability to string together timely offense.
On the mound, Carter Lehrman worked four innings, surrendering a single run on two hits while striking out four batters and walking five, two of which were intentional. He was followed by Dakota Winkleman, who pitched two frames, allowing one run on one hit, striking out one, and issuing two walks and a hit batter.
The loss capped a 13-20 record for Newton, a season that featured a mix of promising performances and growing pains as the young squad navigated a challenging schedule.
