The Newton Cardinals saw their season conclude with a 2-1 loss to Saydel in the Class 3A Substate 6 quarterfinal, a game decided by a single run and a clutch performance from the opposing pitcher.
Despite the final score, Newton managed to out-hit Saydel 4-3, showcasing a disciplined approach at the plate that produced four solid contacts against a pitcher who kept the opposition scoreless.
Looking Ahead
Coach Darin Tisdale praised the effort, highlighting the team's growth in key areas and expressing pride in the players' commitment throughout the campaign.
He noted improvements in doubles, walks and batting average, and pointed to a drop in team ERA from 5.78 a year ago to 4.19 this season as clear evidence of progress.
Key contributors such as Landry Rausch, Aaden Grimm and Dakota Winkleman each played pivotal roles, with Grimm finishing his sophomore campaign with a team‑best 37 hits and Winkleman shouldering the loss after pitching the final two innings.
While the loss was a disappointment, Tisdale said the foundation is solid and expectations will be higher next year as the program builds on the statistical gains and the experience gained in a tightly contested game.
