Newton High School Sports Teams Wrap Up Season with Mixed Results

Soccer squad ends in shutout while softball posts a dominant win, setting the stage for upcoming matchups

The Newton High School spring sports scene concluded this week with two distinct outcomes for its soccer and softball squads, each reflecting the competitive spirit of the community.

Soccer Squad Falls to North Polk

The girls soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to North Polk in the Class 2A Region 6 Semifinal, ending the season without a win. North Polk's record improved to 13-3-1, while Newton's goalkeeper Addyson Cibula made six saves and finished the year with 154 career stops. Aliviah Ross led the Newton scoring chart with 19 goals, and Sophia Coady contributed 10 goals and 12 assists before the final whistle.

Head Coach Susan Altemeier, who had guided the program for eight years, announced her resignation shortly after the match, marking the end of an era for the Newton soccer program.

Softball Team Secures Convincing Victory

In contrast, the Newton softball team posted an 8-0 victory over Des Moines Lincoln, with Leileigh Hammons launching a home run and driving in three runs, while Lexi Frehse added two runs and three RBI. The win lifts the softball squad to 5-3 and sets up a home matchup against Oskaloosa next.

Both programs now turn their attention to the upcoming challenges, hoping to build on the lessons learned and the promising performances of young athletes like Addyson Cibula, Aliviah Ross, Sophia Coady, Leileigh Hammons and Lexi Frehse.
