On Friday the Newton softball squad turned in a dominant performance, capturing three victories that included a resumed contest and a doubleheader against Des Moines East. The first game ended with a 12‑2 win in four innings, the second a 10‑2 triumph in five innings, and the resumed game produced a 6‑2 victory over Pleasantville after a rain delay.
Senior Ava Williams powered the offense with her seventh home run of the season against the Scarlets, while sophomore Mack Sims contributed three hits and freshman Lexi Frehse recorded her first triple of the year in the second game. The team’s balanced attack helped them improve to 18‑11 and set up a Wednesday matchup with Fort Madison.
Baseball Team Faces Setbacks
The Cardinal baseball team endured a pair of defeats in the 2026 Prange Classic, dropping a 17‑9 decision to Waukee Northwest in Ankeny and a 12‑2 loss to ADM in five innings. Despite the setbacks, the team showed moments of resilience, with Dakota Winkleman going two‑for‑three and driving in a run.
Drew Bauer and Jesse Miller each added two RBIs for Newton, while pitcher Lane Rozendaal surrendered two earned runs, and relievers Carter Lehrman and Kreytein Wickliffe contributed additional innings. The pitching staff allowed 12 earned runs across the two games.
Newton’s baseball record now stands at 12‑17, and the club will host Gilbert on Thursday as they look to rebound from the recent losses.
