Newton YMCA is teaming up with Iowa Speedway this week to run a NASCAR‑themed wellness program for more than 100 elementary and middle school students.
The five‑day Speediatrics Fun Day Festival blends pit‑crew training, agility drills and team challenges, turning the track into a playground of movement and cooperation.
Each morning the children are bused from the YMCA to the speedway, where they rotate through stations that teach everything from quick‑change tire work to cooperative games, all designed to spark healthy habits.
The program’s climax arrives on Friday, when every participant receives a brand‑new bicycle, a reward that underscores the event’s focus on community rather than municipal profit.
Community Backing Drives the Festival
Newton City Council member Amy Roth and her husband have been hands‑on, helping to assemble the bikes and cheering on the youngsters as they prepare for the final field day.
Roth’s involvement reflects a broader city commitment to active living, with council members noting that the partnership showcases how sport can unite families and neighborhoods.
While the initiative is timed with a NASCAR race weekend, its organizers stress that the experience is about building teamwork and confidence, not about racing speeds.
