Newtown Youth Football readies for 2026 season amid growing competition

With record player numbers and championship experience, the program aims to develop talent for high school football

A season of growth and ambition

The Newtown Youth Football program is gearing up for the start of its 2026 season, slated to begin on August 30 at the iconic Blue & Gold Stadium. The opening day will mark the culmination of months of preparation, as coaches finalize rosters and players sharpen their skills for the challenges ahead.

Championship pedigree

Adding to the excitement, the sixth‑ and seventh‑grade squads captured the Shoreline Youth Football Conference Championship games in 2025, a testament to the program’s rising competitiveness. Their success has set a high bar for the upcoming campaign, fueling optimism among players, families and volunteers alike.

Building a competitive foundation

This year the tackle football division boasts 165 participants, prompting the league to field two separate seventh‑grade teams to accommodate the depth of talent. Meanwhile, the Hawk teams, which span grades four through eight, will battle across the conference schedule with the ultimate goal of securing a postseason berth.

Opponents this season include familiar rivals such as Monroe, Pomperaug of Southbury, Wallingford, Southington, Glastonbury, Guilford, Cheshire, North Haven, East Haven, Shelton, Branford, Bristol, Madison and Amity of Woodbridge. The breadth of competition underscores the program’s commitment to facing strong teams that test its growth.

League President Kevin Kuzma has repeatedly emphasized that the program’s mission extends beyond winning. “We are focused on developing players who can excel at the high school level,” he said, highlighting the feeder role the league plays for local high school football programs.

Behind the scenes, the league leans heavily on volunteer coaches and parents who contribute countless hours to keep the operation running smoothly. Their dedication ensures that the program can offer structured, supportive environments for every participant.
