NFHS approves sweeping rule changes for 2026‑27
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has given its stamp of approval to a sweeping set of rule modifications that will take effect across a dozen sports for the 2026‑27 academic year. The changes, which were endorsed by the NFHS board earlier this month, aim to modernize equipment use, streamline gameplay and address safety concerns, and they will be rolled out by state athletic associations over the coming months.
Enhanced communication in baseball and softball
Among the most visible updates is the expanded allowance of electronic communication devices in baseball and softball. Pitchers will now be permitted to wear earpieces that receive one‑way instructions from the dugout, a move intended to improve strategic coordination while keeping the flow of the game intact.
Base dimensions and bat specifications
Baseball will also see a shift in base design, with the NFHS permitting the use of either enlarged or double bags at first base. Schools may choose an 18‑inch base, a size that could affect stealing strategies and base‑running calculations. In addition, starting in 2028, bats that meet the USA Baseball Bat Performance Standard with drop weights of -4, -5 or -6 will be eligible for competition, giving teams a broader selection of approved equipment.
Basketball timing adjustments and coach device limits
Basketball officials will be equipped with silent count mechanisms that can correct clock malfunctions without audible interference, helping to preserve the rhythm of play. Meanwhile, coaches in baseball will be restricted to handheld devices in the coach’s box solely for scoring purposes, a rule intended to prevent sign‑stealing and other forms of electronic advantage.
Uniform updates across lacrosse, soccer and volleyball
Uniform regulations will also evolve. In girls lacrosse, all home team jerseys will be required to be white beginning in 2031, a change that seeks to enhance visual clarity for officials and spectators. Soccer will enforce a new sock color rule, mandating that home teams wear dark‑colored socks while only visiting teams may sport white socks, aiming to reduce confusion on the field. Finally, the NFHS has relaxed the strict color‑matching requirement for libero uniforms in volleyball, allowing the defensive specialist’s bottoms to differ in hue from the rest of the team, giving teams greater flexibility in designing functional and personalized libero attire.
