A Strategic Leap into the German Market
The National Hockey League and German football powerhouse FC Bayern Munich have unveiled a multiyear partnership that marks a new chapter for both organizations. By joining forces, the NHL hopes to tap into Germany’s passionate sports culture and vast consumer market, while Bayern seeks to broaden its international footprint beyond the football pitch.
Under the agreement, the NHL will stage four regular‑season contests on German soil across the upcoming 2027‑28 season. Two of those games will be hosted in Munich, where the Boston Bruins will face off against a yet‑to‑be‑determined opponent, and two will be played in Cologne, featuring the Edmonton Oilers. An additional pair of games is slated for Düsseldorf in December, showcasing the Chicago Blackhawks and the Ottawa Senators.
The collaboration emerged after six months of intensive negotiations between NHL senior leadership and Bayern’s executive team. Both sides focused on co‑branding opportunities, joint content creation, and merchandise development, aiming to weave hockey narratives into the club’s already rich tapestry of fan engagement.
Rouven Kasper, Bayern’s chief marketing officer, highlighted the NHL’s global reach and the mutual benefits of sharing best practices in fan outreach and digital strategy. He noted that the partnership could open doors for future outdoor spectacles, including the prospect of an open‑air game at the Allianz Arena, Bayern’s iconic stadium.
Bill Daly, the NHL’s deputy commissioner, emphasized Germany’s status as a priority market, citing the country’s deep‑rooted sports enthusiasm and a fanbase that dwarfs the league’s current online presence. With 45.2 million Instagram followers, Bayern dwarfs the NHL’s 7.3 million, a disparity the league hopes to narrow through targeted campaigns.
The deal also brings notable personalities into the spotlight. Alphonso Davies, the German‑born soccer star who now plays for Bayern, attended the announcement, underscoring the crossover appeal that bridges hockey and football. Meanwhile, NHL players such as Leon Draisaitl and JJ Peterka, both of German descent, are expected to serve as ambassadors for the initiative.
Beyond the immediate schedule, the partnership is positioned as a long‑term platform for exchanging insights on fan experience, merchandise design, and digital content. As the NHL looks to deepen its European foothold, the alliance with Bayern Munich offers a blueprint for how sport‑specific brands can leverage each other’s strengths to achieve shared growth.
