NHL and NHLPA Relaunch Women’s Hockey Advancement Committee to Accelerate Female Participation

New committee introduces fellowship program, strategic initiatives and funding to grow girls' and women's hockey across North America

A new era for women’s hockey

The National Hockey League and its players' association have revived the Women’s Hockey Advancement Committee, a coalition dedicated to expanding pathways for girls and women across the sport. By uniting youth hockey organizations, national governing bodies, college programs, all 32 NHL clubs and the Professional Women’s Hockey League, WHAC will coordinate coaching development, fund grassroots girls' initiatives and stage in‑arena events that showcase female talent at every level.

WHAC’s strategic pillars focus on growing participation, enhancing visibility, strengthening collaboration and developing future leadership. Central to this vision is a seminar and fellowship that brings emerging leaders together with industry pioneers such as Hayley Moore and Erica McKenzie, offering mentorship, networking and a clear route into professional hockey.

The inaugural fellowship, announced for the 2025‑26 academic year, placed Olivia Laroche of Sacred Heart University with the Seattle Kraken. Looking ahead, the Detroit Red Wings and Winnipeg Jets will host the next cohort in 2026‑27, underscoring the league’s commitment to regional representation and talent pipelines.

Financial support from the NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund and the NHL Foundation’s Empowerment Grant for Girls Hockey will fund new programming, ensuring that the committee’s objectives are resourced for sustained impact. This coordinated effort marks a decisive step toward a more inclusive future for hockey.
